As happens in human cultural development, the mashup (mash up and mash-up) concept has its real birth in the gray area between "on the block" musicology and the mainstream music industry. Distinct songs or compositions were combined to make a totally new and unique piece of art. See for example, "Bootleg culture" by Pete Rojas

In the Information Communication Technology (ICT) world a mashup refers to content used on a web or blog or whatever created by merging of different sources of content into one document.

All the big firms in ICT, have some kind of mashup offering, for example Google developed a mashup edit oracle IBM has a whole Mashup Center, Oracle has an Enterprise Mashup offering, Microsoft developed popfly for mashup use with SharePoint among other things, Yahoo as does their search competitor offers mashup capabilities, Adobe facilitates mashup mapping...well, you get the picture.

Mashup, responsibly used, is a very effective conveyor of content. It allows greater flexibility in context as well as the basic composition of content.

Now this innovative phenomena has really struck gold...it has been applied to mainstream televised humor. So enjoy.
